About Heaton Park

Heaton Park is a large Victorian park in the heart of Heaton, first opened in 1879 when Newcastle Corporation acquired around 22.5 acres of the Heaton Hall estate from Addison Potter. It sits within the wider Ouseburn Parks green corridor, adjoining Armstrong Park and Jesmond Dene along the valley of the Ouseburn, and its historic landscape and neighbouring parks are recognised on the national Register of Parks and Gardens. Within its grounds lie the scheduled remains of King John's Palace, a 12th-century tower house also known as Adam of Jesmond's Camera.

The park offers open green space, seasonal planting and mature trees, along with play areas and paths that link directly into Armstrong Park and the deeper wooded dene beyond. Its position at the top of the Ouseburn valley makes it a popular route for walkers moving between Heaton and Jesmond Dene, and it hosts community and seasonal events. Together with its neighbouring parks it forms one of the most significant historic green spaces in east Newcastle.
