Christmas in Heaton 2026
A local guide to Christmas in Heaton: the People's Theatre panto, Santa in the Victoria Tunnel, festive storytimes, carol services, winter walks and getting to the city's shows by Metro.
Heaton does Christmas on a neighbourhood scale. There is no big civic switch-on and no market square, but there is a volunteer theatre staging its own panto, a valley full of festive workshops at the bottom of the hill, churches with long carol traditions and three of the city's best parks for a walk between meals. The city centre, with its pantos and grottos, is a few stops away on the Metro.
Christmas lights
Heaton has no organised Christmas lights switch-on. The nearest is Newcastle's own, on Thursday 12 November 2026 on Grey Street, with entertainment from 6pm and the lights going on at 7pm.
Christmas markets
Heaton has no Christmas market of its own, but the Ouseburn makers' weekends are on the doorstep and Newcastle Christmas Market runs from 19 November to 23 December 2026. Our guide to Christmas markets in Heaton has the dates, the Ouseburn open studios and the best local independents for presents.
The People's Theatre panto
The home-grown highlight is the panto at The People's Theatre on Stephenson Road, a volunteer-run company that has been staging plays in Newcastle for more than a century. This year it is Panto! Beauty and the Beast, a new version by Tom Whalley, running from Saturday 12 to Sunday 20 December 2026 with 1pm, 2pm, 6pm and 7pm performances on different days. Tickets are £20, or £16.50 for children and concessions.
There is also a relaxed performance on 15 December for anyone who finds a full house overwhelming. Be aware the main run uses strobe, haze and pyrotechnics.
Best for:
Best for: a proper family panto without a trip into town.
Santa and children's events
The most unusual Santa visit in the area is underground. Christmas in the Victoria Tunnel on Sunday 29 November sends families through the Victoria Tunnel, the Victorian wagonway that became a wartime air-raid shelter, following clues to find Santa. Each child gets a small gift. It is best for ages four and over, and slots have to be booked through the Ouseburn Trust.
Down the road, Seven Stories runs Festive Storytimes daily from 28 November into early January, with Christmas picture books read aloud for younger children. Sessions sell out, so book early.
If you want a full grotto, the nearest big one is the Santa Experience at Life by Central Station, running 21 November to 23 December for children aged roughly three to ten.
Making and browsing in the Ouseburn
The Biscuit Factory holds a free Winter Festival on 28 and 29 November, with makers, printmaking demonstrations and live painting. From 4 December it hosts Gingerbread Street, a free display of gingerbread buildings made by local teams in support of Oasis Community Housing's Christmas appeal. It is closed on 25 and 26 December.
The Cumberland Arms runs a wooden tree decorations workshop on 12 December and The Suggestibles Pantso on 19 December, an improvised pantomime built from audience suggestions.
Shows in the city by Metro
Chillingham Road and Byker Metro stations are a few stops from the city centre, which makes the big pantos an easy night out without the parking.
- Theatre Royal: Jack and the Beanstalk, from 24 November to 17 January. Monument is the stop.
- Tyne Theatre & Opera House: Aladdin, from 4 December to 3 January, with signed, audio-described and relaxed performances. Central Station is closest.
- Northern Stage: The Snow Queen, a new version by Laura Lindow, from 3 December to 2 January. Get off at Haymarket.
Carol services
St Gabriel's Church on Heaton Road usually keeps a full Anglican Christmas: an Advent carol service partly by candlelight, a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a Christmas Eve crib service and Midnight Mass, and Christmas Day services. In 2025 it also held a Christmas Tree Festival in early December, with trees decorated by local businesses, schools and groups. The church has not yet published its 2026 dates, so check its A Church Near You page or ring the parish office on 0191 265 5843.
Before Advent, on Saturday 28 November, the string players of Royal Northern Sinfonia bring a candlelit winter concert to St Gabriel's.
Heaton Baptist Church and the Catholic church of St Teresa of the Infant Jesus are both on Heaton Road too. Neither had published Christmas times when we checked, so contact them directly.
Festive walks
Heaton Park has no organised Christmas event, but it is the obvious start for a walk to clear the head. From there you can head north through Armstrong Park and into Jesmond Dene, where Pets' Corner, with its goats, rabbits and birds, is a reliable hit with children. Our guide to the best walks in Heaton has the detail. Paths through the Dene can be muddy and slippery in winter, so wear proper shoes.
Boxing Day
There is no single Heaton Boxing Day event. For many households the tradition is simply a long walk, and Jesmond Dene is one of the most popular routes in the city on Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Go early if you want quiet paths.
Shopping, parking and the Metro
Chillingham Road has no organised late-night shopping evening, and we found none announced for 2026. The independents on Heaton Road and Chillingham Road keep their own hours in December, so check individual shops before making a special trip. Parking in Heaton is mostly free and on-street but tight near the shops and stations; our guide to parking in Heaton covers the permit zones.
On past form, the Metro does not run on Christmas Day or New Year's Day and runs a reduced service on Boxing Day. Nexus publishes its festive timetable each December, so check the 2026 version before planning travel.
