Family Activities & Days Out in Heaton & Ouseburn

East Newcastle is one of the best corners of the city for a family day out, and much of it costs nothing at all. Between Heaton's Victorian parks and the reborn Ouseburn valley below, you can string together animals, playgrounds, woodland walks, museums and galleries — often in a single afternoon. This is a broad roundup of what's on offer, grouped so you can pick and choose to suit the weather, the ages of your children and how much energy everyone has.

Free and outdoors

Heaton's parks are the obvious place to start, and they cost nothing to enjoy. Heaton Park is a large Victorian park in the heart of the neighbourhood, with two children's play areas, plenty of open green space for informal games, a terraced 1880s pavilion and seasonal flowerbeds. It runs seamlessly into neighbouring Armstrong Park, so you can wander between the two along wooded paths without ever crossing a road.

From there the green corridor continues down into Jesmond Dene, a steep wooded valley along the Ouseburn shared between Heaton and Jesmond. The Dene has waterfalls, riverside and woodland walks, and — a firm favourite with younger children — Pets' Corner, a free small-animal attraction that has been delighting families since the 1960s. Millfield House visitor centre has a café and toilets, which makes the Dene an easy half-day on its own.

Best for:

Heaton Park, Armstrong Park and Jesmond Dene form a continuous green corridor following the Ouseburn. You can start with a playground in Heaton and end up at the waterfalls in the Dene without getting in the car.

Down in the valley proper, Ouseburn Farm is a free-entry community city farm right on the valley floor. It's home to pigs, goats, sheep, ponies and poultry, along with smaller residents such as guinea pigs and chinchillas, plus an orchard, gardens, a café and a shop. You don't need to book to visit, and it's easily accessible for buggies and wheelchairs. As a working charity, opening days shift with the seasons, and special activities such as goat walking are pre-booked — so check ahead before you set off. Weekends and school holidays bring extra activities like petting sessions and seasonal events.

Indoor and rainy-day

When the weather turns — and in Newcastle it will — the area has plenty of covered options.

The star turn is Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children's Books, set inside a converted seven-storey Victorian warehouse on Lime Street. Its galleries bring much-loved authors and characters to life with hands-on exhibitions, hiding spaces and play areas, and there's a well-stocked children's bookshop and a café on site. General entry to the galleries is free, while some storytimes, workshops and performances are ticketed and best booked in advance — check ahead so you don't miss anything your children would love.

A short walk away, The Biscuit Factory is the UK's largest independent contemporary art, craft and design gallery, spread over two floors of a restored warehouse. It's free to browse, there's a café, and it's a surprisingly relaxed place to wander with children — a good way to pass a wet hour without spending anything.

The valley is also dotted with independent cafés if you simply need to get out of the rain and refuel: the farm and Seven Stories both have their own, and there are family-friendly options a short stroll away.

Active and hands-on

For families who want to do rather than just look, the Ouseburn has a few standout options.

Stepney Bank Stables is one of the very few inner-city riding schools in the UK — a registered charity offering horse-riding lessons for children and adults, alongside youth and community programmes. Sessions must be arranged in advance, so this is one to plan a day around rather than drop in on, but it's a genuinely memorable experience for a horse-mad child.

Older children with energy to burn are well served too: Heaton's high streets have a skate and scooter scene, and the parks give plenty of room for bikes, scooters and ball games. For toddlers, the play areas in Heaton Park and beside Pets' Corner in the Dene are the go-to spots.
