About Seven Stories - The National Centre for Children's Books

Seven Stories is the National Centre for Children's Books, the UK's only museum wholly dedicated to the art of British children's literature. It occupies a converted Victorian warehouse in the Ouseburn Valley, close to the Tyne, and takes its name from the seven floors of the restored building. Founded as a charity in 1996 by Elizabeth Hammill OBE and Mary Briggs OBE, the centre opened to the public in August 2005 following a multi-million-pound conversion of the former mill and warehouse into galleries, event spaces and a bookshop.

Seven Stories cares for a nationally significant, accredited collection of original manuscripts, artwork and archives by British writers and illustrators from the 1930s to the present, with material connected to figures such as Judith Kerr, Philip Pullman and David Almond. Visitors can explore interactive family exhibitions drawn from the collection, browse the specialist children's bookshop, and take part in a year-round programme of events, storytelling and learning activities. Entry to the visitor centre is free.
