About St Gabriel's Church
St Gabriel's is the Church of England parish church for much of Heaton, standing on the corner of Heaton Road and St Gabriel's Avenue. The permanent church was built in 1899 to a Gothic design by the Newcastle architect Frank W. Rich, on a site given by Lord Armstrong, replacing an earlier iron mission chapel that had served as a daughter church of St Michael's, Byker. Built of snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, it is cruciform with an aisled nave and a north-east tower; a south transept and chapel were added in 1931. The building is listed for its local architectural and historic interest.
The church seeks to serve everyone who lives in the parish, whether or not they are people of faith. Its main Sunday service is at 9.45am, and it maintains a choral tradition with regular sung services. St Gabriel's has a strong record of community outreach: a former worshipper, Alison Kay, founded the People's Kitchen, the long-running Newcastle charity for homeless and vulnerable people, and members of the congregation established Martha and Mary's, a volunteer-run community cafe on nearby Chillingham Road offering hospitality and a place to meet.
