About Heaton Baptist Church
Heaton Baptist Church occupies a handsome red-brick building of 1904 on the corner of Heaton Road and Mundella Terrace. Plans for a Baptist presence in Heaton began in 1895, when members of Jesmond Baptist Church became keen to plant a congregation in the growing suburb, and the church was built with plain brickwork and lancet windows in a simple Gothic idiom. It appears on Newcastle's Local List of buildings of local architectural or historic interest. The adjacent Victorian church hall was replaced in 2008 by the modern HBC Life Centre, whose multi-purpose function and meeting rooms are used by the church and available for community hire.
Describing itself as a friendly, relaxed and multicultural church, its main Sunday gathering is at 10.30am, with a QR-code system giving non-English speakers a real-time guide to the service. It is one of Heaton's busiest community hubs, running children's and youth programmes, small Lifegroups, prayer and pastoral care, and bereavement support. It also hosts a Place of Welcome drop-in, Growbaby Newcastle (which provides baby clothing and equipment to families in need), and a range of community, international and justice-focused activities.
