East Newcastle has a rich spiritual life, and the streets around Heaton Road, Chillingham Road and High Heaton are home to a wide range of active churches and places of worship. Many of them open their doors well beyond Sunday mornings, running foodbanks, toddler groups, cafés and community projects that anyone in the area is welcome to use. Church of England

St Gabriel's Church stands on the corner of Heaton Road and St Gabriel's Avenue (NE6 5QN) and is the parish church for much of Heaton. Its main Sunday service is at 9.45am, when the church choir sings regularly. St Gabriel's is closely involved in local life: members founded the People's Kitchen, the church supports the Martha and Mary's café on Chillingham Road, and it takes an active part in Heaton Pride each July. There are also groups for younger members, including a Junior Church and a choir club for children.

St Francis Church, at Cleveland Gardens in High Heaton (NE7 7QH), is a distinctive modern church serving the northern end of the neighbourhood. It hosts a busy programme of services and community events through the week; check the church website for current times.

Roman Catholic

Heaton's Catholic community is part of the Parish of Christ the King, which brings together the churches of Heaton, Byker and Walker in the east end of Newcastle. The Heaton church is St Teresa of the Infant Jesus on Heaton Road (NE6 5HN), an unusual octagonal building consecrated in 1971 with its roof pleated into eight radiating pitches. Baptist

Heaton Baptist Church occupies a handsome 1904 building on the corner of Heaton Road and Mundella Terrace (NE6 5HN). Its main Sunday gathering is at 10.30am. The church is one of the busiest community hubs in the area, running children's and youth programmes, Lifegroups, bereavement support, a "Place of Welcome" drop-in, and Growbaby Newcastle, which provides clothing and equipment to families with young children. United Reformed and Methodist

St Cuthbert's Church on Heaton Road (NE6 5HE) is a Local Ecumenical Partnership formed in 2006 when Presbyterian, United Reformed and Methodist congregations came together. Housed in a striking Early English-style building of 1895 on the corner of Cardigan Terrace, it offers a shared home for two traditions. Check the church website for current service times.

Heaton Methodist Church meets at Simonside Terrace (NE6 5JX), just off Heaton Road, with a Sunday service at 10.45am. Like many Methodist churches, it opens its halls for community groups through the week; contact the church for details.

Islam

Heaton Mosque and Islamic Centre is one of Newcastle's original mosques, established in 1980 and now serving the community for more than forty-five years. It is based at 1 Rothbury Terrace (NE6 5XH), close to the city centre. The mosque provides a welcoming and accessible space for worship and learning, with facilities for both men and women, a wheelchair-accessible prayer hall, and educational and community activities. As a registered charity, it places a strong emphasis on community cohesion and wellbeing, and offers services in English, Urdu and Hindi.

One of the striking things about Heaton is how much its faith communities cooperate. Heaton Churches Together brings the Christian congregations into shared events and social action, from foodbank support to festival celebrations, and several of the projects mentioned above depend on volunteers drawn from across different churches.
