About Wild Roots Community Garden

Wild Roots Community Garden is a volunteer-built community garden on Stepney Bank in the Ouseburn valley, next to Stepney Bank Stables, created on a former industrial scrap of land on the edge of St Ann's. Supported by the Ouseburn Trust, it has been transformed into a garden for wildlife and people, with planted beds, native wildflowers and a pond that joins a bog garden, helped by funding from Northumbrian Water's Branch Out fund and Kew's Grow Wild community programme.

The garden aims to be a free, inclusive green space for the surrounding communities of St Ann's, Byker and Heaton, with volunteer gardening sessions (advertised through GoodGym) and occasional events. Visitors reach it through the gates of the Print Works car park, where the Ouseburn market is held, and keep walking until they find the garden.
