Loosely based on Upton Sinclair's novel Oil!, the film follows prospector Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) from 1911 California as his hunt for oil sparks a long feud with a young preacher played by Paul Dano. Robert Elswit's desert cinematography and Jonny Greenwood's score are much admired, but the 158-minute film belongs to Day-Lewis's towering performance. Certificate 15.
