Heaton Road has become the unlikely heart of east Newcastle's cocktail scene. Flight at 188 Heaton Road is the standout — a small, low-lit room of velvet chairs and soft light, and the first bar in the city to serve hand-carved ice, so every drink arrives looking like something considered. The menu leans on balance and bold, seasonal flavours rather than novelty, and it is walk-ins only, which keeps the room feeling like a neighbourhood secret. Next door at 190, House is a more relaxed proposition: a genuine local bar where the staff know their spirits and you can settle in over a well-made classic without any ceremony.

The city's wider cocktail names have noticed. Mother Mercy, one of Newcastle's best-loved cocktail bars, has expanded onto Chillingham Road with a compact 40-cover room built around a seasonal, ingredient-led menu — proof that Heaton's evening trade now pulls talent out from the centre of town rather than the other way round.

Craft and wine bars

If cocktails aren't your thing, Heaton does wine as well as anywhere in the city. Sobremesa on Chillingham Road is a proper neighbourhood wine bar specialising in innovative Spanish bottles, poured alongside pintxos and sharing boards — an easy place to lose an evening grazing. A few doors along, Flint doubles as a natural wine bar as much as a Neapolitan pizzeria, with a low-intervention list that has made it a Heaton fixture since 2019.

For drinking at home, or picking up something better than the supermarket before a night out, Pour Decisions is the area's dedicated wine shop. Run by the team behind the acclaimed Nest, it stocks restaurant-quality bottles to take away, and the staff will happily point you toward something interesting for the price of a chat.

Down in the valley, Kiln shifts from flame-cooked brunch by day to evening dining and drinks after dark, its handmade ceramics and open kitchen giving the whole place a warm, unhurried glow — a good spot for a low-key drink that isn't a pub.

Late nights and DJ rooms

When you want the night to keep going, the Ouseburn is where it happens. The Cluny, set in a former flax mill on Lime Street, works as a bar long after the day-trippers leave, and its 300-capacity room means there is almost always a gig or a late set running on. Just up the hill on Boyd Street, Ernest turns from daytime café-bar into one of the valley's best late venues, with a busy programme of DJ nights, live music and arts events pulling a mixed crowd of makers, students and locals well past midnight.

For something closer to a club night, Cobalt Studios on Boyd Street is the place. A not-for-profit arts and music venue — artist studios by day — it hosts some of the Ouseburn's best club nights and events after dark, the sort of room where the line-up matters more than the décor. Newer arrivals like House and the valley's growing cluster of small bars mean you are never short of somewhere to land between sets.

Planning a night out

The two halves of the area suit different moods. For a polished evening of cocktails and wine, keep to Heaton Road and Chillingham Road, where Flight, House, Sobremesa and Flint sit within a few minutes' walk of one another and Chillingham Road Metro drops you right in. For a longer, louder night that runs late, head down into the Ouseburn valley, where Ernest, The Cluny and Cobalt Studios are all walkable — though the climb back up to Heaton at closing time is a fair one, so a taxi home is the wiser bet.
