Healthy snacks are included, and it runs on a flexible hourly basis, which suits parents who need childcare that flexes around shifts rather than a fixed 10-to-4 camp.

Best for: Local, flexible holiday-club childcare with plenty of active play and summer coach trips, a short walk from most of Heaton.

For older children who already have a sport they love, the Chillingham Road Sports and Arts Centre on Ninth Avenue is worth knowing about. It is a community sports and arts centre with a sports hall and a climbing wall, and it hosts a range of public classes and clubs. It does not run a single branded summer camp, so check what individual clubs and coaches are putting on over the holidays — but it is a useful local venue for a martial arts, climbing or multi-sports session without leaving the neighbourhood.

Gymnastics on Heaton's doorstep

Just east of Heaton, in the Benfield sports complex off Benfield Road in Walkergate, the City of Newcastle Gymnastics Academy runs one of the area's most established holiday camps. Its summer 2026 camps take place across five weeks — the weeks beginning 20 July, 3 August, 10 August, 17 August and 24 August (the week of 27 July is closed) — and are open to children from reception age (4) up to 16, grouped by age.

The day runs 10am to 4pm, with gymnastics on the full range of apparatus in the morning and arts, crafts and outdoor activities after lunch. Wraparound care is available from 8.30am and until 5.30pm for parents who need a longer day. You can book by the full week or by the single day. It operates a strict nut-free policy, so packed lunches and snacks need to be free of nut products.

Best for: Confidence-building gymnastics for ages 4 to 16, with wraparound care and single-day flexibility, a couple of miles from the centre of Heaton.

A short drive or Metro ride away

If your child wants a broad multi-sports week, a couple of well-run camps sit just outside Heaton and are easy to reach.

Next Generation NE Sport runs multi-sports camps for children aged 5 to 13, with a full day from 8.45am to 3.30pm. Over summer 2026 it runs for six weeks from the week beginning Monday 20 July. The nearest venues to Heaton are Westfield School in Gosforth (running weeks one to five) and Kingston Park Primary (weeks one, three and six) — both a short drive or Metro ride away. Sports School is another long-running Newcastle operator, going since 1993, offering multi-sports days for ages 5 to 14 over five weeks in summer 2026. For 2026 its nearest venues to Heaton are on the Jesmond side — Newcastle High School for Girls and the Royal Grammar School — plus Longbenton High School, with Tax-Free Childcare accepted. Its usual Jesmond Park Academy base is out of action this summer for maintenance, so double-check the venue when you book.

Newcastle City Juniors runs an FA-coached football camp for boys and girls aged 4 to 14, with days running 10am to 3pm and optional breakfast and wraparound care. It is over in Benwell in west Newcastle rather than the east, so it is more of a special-trip option than a local one, but it is a good bet for a football-mad child who wants a full week of coaching, games and tournaments.

Booking tips for the rest of summer

With the break already under way, the best-value early-bird prices have usually passed, but there are still places to be had. A few things worth remembering as you book the remaining weeks:

• Many camps let you book single days as well as full weeks, which is handy for topping up an odd day of cover.
• Several providers accept government Tax-Free Childcare, which can take a useful chunk off the cost — check each one before you pay.
• Check the daily times carefully. A 10am-to-4pm camp with paid wraparound is a different proposition from a flexible hourly club, depending on your working day.
