Northern Rye

A small-batch microbakery in the Ouseburn specialising in long-proved sourdough and viennoiserie.

About Northern Rye

Northern Rye is a handcrafted, small-batch microbakery beside the river in Newcastle's Ouseburn valley, on Riverside Walk. Opened in 2020, it specialises in long-fermented sourdough breads and viennoiserie, combining slow fermentation techniques with skilled hand-baking. Beyond its Ouseburn home, the business has grown to include a bakehouse and further outlet in North Shields, and it supplies wholesale to restaurants across the region, including highly regarded kitchens.

The bakery places a strong emphasis on quality and sustainability, working with premium suppliers such as regeneratively grown Wildfarmed flour and Estate Dairy butter. Its counter is known for pastries and breads including cinnamon buns, almond croissants, hazelnut praline cruffins and sesame sourdough, alongside sandwiches and coffee. It has been recognised in national coverage, with Time Out featuring it among the best bakeries in the UK.
