East Newcastle has quietly become one of the best corners of the city for anyone who loves good bread and a proper cake. Between the independent high street on Chillingham Road, the cafés along Heaton Road, and the reborn Ouseburn valley below, you can put together a whole day around freshly baked things. On Chillingham Road

Chillingham Road is the natural place to start. The Bakery, at 282 Chillingham Road (NE6 5LQ), is a hand-crafted, artisan operation turning out sweet pastries, muffins, savoury scones and generously filled sandwiches. It opens early most days, so it is a reliable stop for a morning pastry or a loaf to take home, and its surplus often turns up on the Too Good To Go app at the end of the day if you like a bargain.

A little further along at number 245 (NE6 5LL) is Mokka Café & Bakery, a bright, female-run Turkish café and bakery that has become one of Heaton's most talked-about brunch spots. Alongside its Turkish breakfasts you will find a counter of pastries and sweets — the baklava is the thing to try — plus proper Turkish coffee to go with them.

For a speciality-coffee-and-pastry combination, it is hard to beat Neighbourhood Coffee at 214 Chillingham Road. It is best known for its coffee, but the pastries and baked goods on the counter are a big part of the draw, and there is an upstairs seating area if you want to linger over a croissant. Vegan options are usually available too.

Cakes and celebration bakes on Heaton Road

If it is cake you are after, The Lily Tree Bakery at 61 Heaton Road (NE6 5HE) is a genuine find. This family-run bakery is fully gluten free, nut free and soya free, with plenty of vegan and dairy-free options, so it is a lifeline for anyone who usually has to miss out. None of that is at the expense of the bakes themselves — the counter is filled with bright, joyful cupcakes, slices, pies and colourful celebration cakes that look every bit as good as they taste. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, so plan around its midweek hours.

Sourdough and pastries in the Ouseburn

Down in the valley, Northern Rye is the area's standout artisan bakery. Its bakeshop on Riverside Walk (NE6 1LX) is a handcrafted, small-batch microbakery specialising in long-proved sourdough breads and viennoiserie, using quality flour and butter and letting the dough develop over many hours. The country sourdough is the bestseller, but the pastries and freshly made sandwiches are just as good, and there is smooth coffee to go with them. It is an easy detour if you are already down in the Ouseburn for the farm, the galleries or a riverside walk.

For something more indulgent, Dreamworld Cakes occupies one of the railway arches at Arch 3, Stepney Bank (NE1 2NP), a family-run patisserie and café turning out fine continental cakes, truffles and biscuits. It is a favourite for afternoon tea and takes commissions for special-occasion and wedding cakes, so it is worth remembering when there is something to celebrate. Opening days run later in the week, so check before you go.

Weekends bring one more Ouseburn treat. Proven Goods Co, tucked into Unit 1, Maling Court at Hoults Yard on Walker Road (NE6 2HL), makes traditional hand-rolled, slow-proven doughnuts alongside ethically sourced coffee, and has built a loyal following since starting out as a market stall. It opens Friday to Sunday only, and the best flavours sell out, so arrive early.

The high-street staples

Not every bakery run needs to be artisan. Greggs at 209 Chillingham Road is the local branch of the North East's most famous export, and it remains the go-to for a warm sausage roll, a sandwich or a quick coffee on the move. It sits comfortably alongside the independents rather than replacing them — plenty of Heaton residents happily use both.

Making a day of it

The nice thing about baking in this part of Newcastle is how walkable it all is. You could pick up a sourdough loaf and a coffee at Northern Rye, wander up through the parks, and finish with a cake on Heaton Road or a Turkish pastry on Chillingham Road.
