Benton Park Primary School Opens Its New Net Zero Building
Benton Park Primary School in NE7 has opened a new net zero building with a green roof and improved facilities for pupils with SEND, replacing a school building more than 70 years old.
Families at Benton Park Primary School have a brand new school to walk to. The school on Corchester Walk (NE7) has opened a purpose-built replacement for its old building, which had been in use for more than 70 years, giving local children a modern, energy-efficient place to learn.
The new building was announced by Newcastle City Council on 28 September 2026, as reported on the council's news pages.
What has changed
The school has been built to net zero standards, with a bio-solar green roof that combines planting with solar panels, and native hedging along the boundary of the site. Inside, the council says the learning and play spaces are light and spacious, and the facilities for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have been improved.
That matters at Benton Park in particular, because the school includes an integrated resourced provision for deaf pupils alongside its mainstream classes. It has 420 places from Reception to Year 6, plus a 26-place nursery.
How it was paid for
Benton Park was selected for the Department for Education's School Rebuilding Programme in 2022. Newcastle City Council added its own funding on top of the government's standard specification to raise the quality of the finished building.
Councillor Christine Morrissey said the investment "will provide generations of children with high-quality facilities that support learning, wellbeing and inclusion".
What happens next
The old school building is due to be demolished, and the redeveloped site is set to include a multi-use games area for pupils.
