Heaton School Holidays and Term Dates (Newcastle, 2026/27)

Whether you are booking a family holiday, arranging childcare, or just trying to remember exactly when half term falls, the school calendar is the page every Heaton parent ends up hunting for. Heaton's community schools follow the term dates set by Newcastle City Council, so this guide sets those out plainly for the current 2026/27 academic year and the year ahead, 2027/28. Every date below has been taken directly from the council's official published calendars.

Please note: these are the dates for Newcastle City Council community schools. Academies, foundation trust schools, voluntary aided (church) schools, free schools and independent schools are not obliged to follow this calendar and may set their own dates. Always check directly with your own child's school before booking anything.

2026/27 academic year

Autumn term 2026

The Christmas holiday then runs from Monday 21 December 2026 until schools return in the new year.

Spring term 2027

The Easter holiday runs from Friday 26 March to Friday 9 April 2027, with Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March.

Summer term 2027

The early May bank holiday falls on Monday 3 May 2027, and the spring bank holiday on Monday 31 May 2027, within the May half-term week. Schools break up for the summer on Friday 16 July 2027, and re-open on Monday 6 September 2027.

2027/28 academic year

Autumn term 2027

The Christmas holiday runs from Monday 20 December 2027 into the new year.

Spring term 2028

The Easter holiday runs from Monday 10 April to Friday 21 April 2028, with Good Friday on 14 April and Easter Monday on 17 April.

Summer term 2028

The early May bank holiday falls on Monday 1 May 2028, and the spring bank holiday on Monday 29 May 2028, within the May half-term week. Schools break up for the summer on Friday 21 July 2028, and re-open on Monday 4 September 2028.

A note on staff training (INSET) days

The dates above are the council's published term dates, but they are not the whole story for any individual school. Maintained schools are open to pupils for 190 days a year, and the council calendar sets aside a small number of additional non-teaching days (often called INSET or staff training days) on top of that. Crucially, these are chosen by each school individually, not fixed across the city, so the exact days when your child's school is closed for training will not necessarily match another Heaton school's.

That means it is always worth checking your own school's published calendar at the start of the year, as an INSET day can extend a holiday or fall on an ordinary week. Schools usually publish these dates well in advance in newsletters and on their websites.
