About This Event

The Zawose Queens are Pendo and Leah Zawose, who perform music of the Gogo (Wagogo) people of Dodoma in central Tanzania, blending the chizeze fiddle, illimba thumb piano and ngoma drums with polyphonic singing and subtle electronics. Pendo's father and Leah's grandfather was the late Dr Hukwe Zawose, the tradition's most famous exponent. Their debut album Maisha is the first time women of the Zawose family have led as vocalists and performers, developed through songwriting workshops with UK producers Oli Barton-Wood and Tom Excell. DJ Sir Rob is also on the bill. The show is supported by The Liveline Fund.
