Find a Tutor in Heaton

Maths and English tuition, music lessons on Chillingham Road, ballet, youth theatre and adult learning: a practical guide to finding the right tutor in Heaton, plus tips on DBS checks and trial lessons.

Heaton.live·

Heaton is a neighbourhood full of families, students and teachers, so it is no surprise that there is plenty of demand for tuition. What it does not have is a cluster of high-street tuition centres in the way Gosforth does. Instead, Heaton's strengths are its music school, its youth theatre and dance classes, with the big academic tuition brands a short drive or bus ride away. This guide covers the options that genuinely serve Heaton, and how to choose between them.

Browse our tutor directory

The quickest place to start is our Tutors page, which lists tutors and tuition providers serving Heaton across academic subjects, music, dance, drama, sport and languages, each with contact details so you can get in touch directly.

Maths and English tuition

Kumon High Heaton

Kumon High Heaton is the nearest of the big tuition brands. Despite the name, sessions are held at the Oxford Centre in Longbenton, just north-east of High Heaton. It runs the standard Kumon maths and English programmes, built around short daily worksheets at home and regular visits to the study centre, and it takes children of all ages and abilities. Class times are published on the centre's Kumon page, currently Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Best for: Best for steady, self-paced practice in maths and English.

Further afield

If you want a teacher-led tuition centre, the nearest options are outside Heaton, in Gosforth and at Kingston Park, and several national tutoring firms arrange one-to-one tutors who visit your home or teach online. Most offer a free assessment or trial session, so it is worth comparing two or three before you commit. Our tutors page lists more local options.

Best for: Worth the journey for exam preparation or a structured centre setting.

Music lessons

Northern Music Centre

Heaton's standout is the Northern Music Centre at 208 Chillingham Road, a private music school with seven dedicated teaching studios and around 25 specialist teachers. Lessons are one-to-one and cover piano and keyboard, guitar, singing, strings, woodwind, brass and drums, plus music theory classes. It is a short walk from Chillingham Road Metro, which makes after-school lessons easy to fit in.

Best for: Best for one-to-one lessons on almost any instrument.

Independent guitar teachers

Heaton also has independent instrumental teachers working from home studios or teaching online. Adam Soper Guitar Tuition, based in Heaton and listed on our Tutors page, teaches electric and acoustic guitar to children and adults, with preparation for Rockschool, Trinity and RGT graded exams. Teachers like this usually share their exact teaching address only once you book, which is normal practice.

Best for: Best for guitarists who want flexible, exam-focused lessons.

Dance and drama

St Hilda's Ballet School

St Hilda's Ballet School serves Heaton and Jesmond, with classes at the Heaton Scout Hut on Teasdale Gardens in High Heaton and at St Hilda's Church Hall in Jesmond. Its distinguishing feature is live piano accompaniment in class. There are children's classes up to 16, plus intermediate and adult ballet.

Best for: Best for traditional ballet with live music.

Young People's Theatre

The People's Theatre on Stephenson Road runs Young People's Theatre for ages 11 to 17, with term-time workshops on Thursday evenings. Membership is £30 a year (£18 reduced), but places are limited and the theatre says the wait for a place is currently 6 to 18 months, so apply early. New members start in April and September.

Best for: Best for teenagers who want to act and perform on a real stage.

Learning for adults

Tuition is not just for children. Newcastle City Learning's Heaton Centre on Trewhitt Road, off Chillingham Road, is the base for the council's adult English and maths teams and also runs ESOL courses for speakers of other languages, along with some other subjects such as languages and art. It is a good starting point if you want to brush up your maths, gain a qualification or improve your English as an adult.

Best for: Best for adults returning to English, maths or ESOL.

How to choose a tutor

  • Check DBS status. Anyone teaching children one-to-one should hold a current enhanced DBS certificate. Centres and agencies handle this, but with an independent tutor, ask to see it before the first lesson.
  • Ask about qualifications. For academic subjects, look for a degree in the subject or qualified teacher status. For music, ask about teaching experience and which exam boards they prepare students for.
  • Book a trial or assessment. Most centres offer a free assessment or trial, and many independent tutors will do a first lesson so you can check the fit.
  • Agree how progress is reported. A good tutor tells you what they are working on and how your child is getting on.
  • Ask other parents. Heaton's school gate and local parents' groups are often the best source of recommendations for independent tutors.
