About This Event

Star and Shadow's two-day retrospective, curated by film scholar and documentarian Sanghita Sen, celebrates Ritwik Ghatak, one of South Asia's most original post-Independence filmmakers, whose work explores social justice, displacement and ecological crisis. Sen introduces the films, and there are no trailers or adverts. The Cloud-Capped Star (1960, 4:30pm) is a melodrama about Nita, a self-sacrificing young woman taken for granted by her family, and Ghatak's greatest commercial success. The Golden Line (1965, 7:30pm), the least screened film of his Partition Trilogy, follows a refugee family rebuilding life beside the Subarnarekha river (content note: themes of suicide). One ticket covers both films, with a 30-minute interval; 50% of box office goes to Medical Aid Palestine.
